Key Ring – Lose those membership cards

by DroidGeek on November 10, 2009

Key Ring the Android app from Froogloid replaces all your membership club cards. Some of you probably have a couple of these plastic membership cards on your key chain right now, stop the madness and get rid of them with this neat little application.

Keyring works on just about any card that has a barcode such as gym memberships, video rental cards, and those grocery discount cards. Use the app to scan your various cards which is then stored on your Droid phone, you can categorize each card in a nice little drop down menu for later use.

Now all you need is your Droid phone next time you go rent a movie and let the clerk scan your phone. There’s something kinda cool about that.

Grab this app for free from the Android Market.

Although this app has a pretty good success rate its not perfect. Here’s a video showing some tips for using a scanner on the Droid phone.

Is it possible to put your library card on this app?

DroidGeek March 8, 2010 at 11:38 am

If it has a bar code than it should work.

ALD April 12, 2010 at 3:23 pm

Is this app reliable most of the time? I would like to use it for all my cards, but don’t really want to run into that embarrassing moment when giving the phone to the cashier and their not able to read it while the line behind me starts to turn into an angry mob of impatient shoppers… Also, will a Verizon Droid screen protector make much of a difference?

Is this app compatible with Android 2.1? I get an error stating something about Palm OS and it crashes.

I just tried my bar code (using Key Ring) at Safeway, and it wouldn’t scan.

I also have the Verizon Droid screen protector on my phone (just like ALD above). Is that why it wouldn’t scan at the register?

Follow-up: I just tried scanning my phone at PetSmart, and it wouldn’t scan there either.

Why does this app want location and network communication and phone state/ID permissions? Seems just a bit intrusive for an app that takes a pic of a barcode and then displays it

The folks having a problem scanning the barcode, did you take note of the scanning procedure? (90 degrees to the scanner,, 5″-6″ away from scanner) If this app works,, I want it,, but if not,, well you know.

I just tried this at Price Chopper and it didn’t work. Man, I was excited to get rid of the cards, and key rings, but now I’m not sure. I don’t like holding people up either and I was certainly getting a mean look when it didn’t work. Fortunately, I had my price chopper card on my real key ring still.

Tried this one and it didn’t work at all. I was disappointed as this would be great if it did.

So, the real question is, “did real person actually get this app. to perform as advertised in accordance with the applicable tech manual?” just don’t want to waste my time scanning all of my cards, to find that they don’t work on any scanner. I worked for a Grocery chain, and I have scanned some pretty banged up cards and gotten them to read. even ones with “Scotch Tape” on them.

Great idea – POOR execution. I scanned all my cards – no problem. Have tried to use them twice – FAILED both times. Scanners won’t read the barcode off my Droid X and yes, I did turn down the screen brightness as told and asked the checkers to scan it for 4-5 inches away as instructed. at both places the checkers tried hard to get it to work because htye thought it was really cool, but in the end, we pulled out the real key ring cards. F – for fail!

just tried mine at cvs and it worked, i have an anti glare protector on my droid x. guy used a scan gun and it worked. will try other stores as i go along but for now i can at least get rid of cvs

Jason November 27, 2010 at 7:22 am

how do I download this app on my phone?

Peter January 19, 2011 at 1:15 pm

This worked great on my Droid X when I had an ANTI GLARE screen protector. After removing the screen protector, the scan guns could not read it.

I used it at my Health Club and it wouldn’t work (Boston Sports Clubs). Will need to try it at other locations before I totally give up. An app needs to work consistently or it’s not beneficial. Whoever created this app, it needs to be fixed!!! It’s a great idea, but before sending out any app to the public, it needs to be tested first.

Am I the only one who is mildly amused by the fact that this is an app specifically for scanning barcodes, but it lacks a QR Code to download it?

gretchen nahas June 22, 2011 at 9:59 am

I was told that giant eagle was able to use the key ring app but is not doing it any more. What is the point of having it if you can’t use it.

stevey June 22, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Geez, they make an ap for anything. I use a droid screen protector from xoskins. You guys should review one.
