I’m liking Searchify http://olilan.co.uk/searchify – it’s a bit like Firefox’s Ubiquity for the android search box. Does calculator, unit convertor, wikipedia search, translate etc. Very useful.

Max March 2, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Ringdroid is very handy for quickly turning songs into ringtones.

Joe March 3, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Some new, some old. The more often we tell everyone, they may check them out! In no particular order:

Mabilo Ringtones
Useless Facts
Screebl
Free Dictionary
Droid Light
Car Mode
NewsRob (must have)
Daily Strip (comics)
SportsTap
Bar Control

Whoops – almost forgot the most important:

Advanced Task Killer

joe March 4, 2010 at 9:21 am

ShapeWriter – much faster texting. You will LOVE it!
Celeste
ShootU
Lightning Bug

Sumit March 4, 2010 at 11:00 am

For me the best app is the shapewriter. it takes a little time to get used to it, but once you are into it you will be amazed how you lived without it till now

JOHN March 5, 2010 at 9:16 pm

My favorite app is Screebl.I had trouble with droid blanking screen when getting phone calls this keeps

Valerie Tewksbury March 13, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I can’t do without Swype. My friends are amazed when I show them how easy it makes using the keyboard.

Paul March 15, 2010 at 7:13 pm

One app I have thought would be useful is a volume or dB meter on a phone with warnings to exposure. One third of Americans suffer some hearing damage. The best defense against this is knowing that you are in a dangerous environment.

Paul March 16, 2010 at 9:39 am

For transcribing voice to text and other useful stuff, try Google Voice (it is more than just an app, it is a replacement for you voicemail, but should interact great with an Android phone according to what I’ve heard). I have not tried it myself, as yet. In fact this is one thing that iphone will apparently not support (they refused to approve the google voice app, though I guess now you can access it through a web browser instead).

I’d suggest reading up on it a bit first, though…it appears to be hard to back out of…as it replaces your carrier’s voicemail system among other things… I’d start with:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice?hl=en
and see what issues people are having…

bob bolin March 17, 2010 at 8:41 am

TriCorder has a dB meter and several other meters…free on the market (costs money for iPhone)

Paul March 21, 2010 at 2:24 am

Droid Youtube video quality is not as good as Pornhub.

wixeroo March 21, 2010 at 6:51 am

Layar is an amazing app. It brings your GPS, camera, and the web all into play to show you things through the eye of your camera that you would not know about otherwise. Just point your camera at just about any place and it layers in a bunch of different informative tid-bits.

Jamey March 23, 2010 at 1:46 pm

Astro cant be beat adds allkinds of ways to screw up your phone with a process killer built in.

love the way the browser will let you save video on sites that you cant with your PC

Barcode Scanner rocks

Aaron March 23, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I really enjoy the Aldiko e-reader app, I have found many rare and out-of-print titles available free.

MrMambo March 24, 2010 at 6:55 am

I love the RingDroid app. Editing ringtones has never been easier!
Hey posters, STOP WHINING ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT and post what you HAVE! R E A D the top: “We want you to LIST YOUR FAVORITE APPS in the comment section so other visitors have a nice resource of apps to choose from and even try new apps they never even heard of. Let’s share!”
DAMMIT man, dumb people piss me off… or maybe I just haven’t had my coffee yet… at least that can be fixed.

Dave Osorio March 24, 2010 at 6:18 pm

1) “Google Sky Map” is a pretty cool app. My kids love it and its fun to go outside and look at the stars and planets. FREE

2) “Mabilo Ringtones” and “Mabilo Wallpaper” are FREE also. I use them often.

Pandora March 25, 2010 at 1:23 am

Can anybody recommend a ruler program?

justsavvy March 25, 2010 at 6:55 pm

I enjoy these apps I came across..

Celeste(sp?) lite
Healthy recipes -I’m veggie so its nice for new ideas nom nom avocado hummus
Air painter-it would be cooler if more people using it were around
Coloroid-lame concept but challenging and addictive
Easy note-keeps a simple list and organizes multiple lists very handy
Fx camera- I heart the solarized effect
Wolframalpha-just check it out not a search engine more of a question encyclopedia but different than wiki just go

webreaver March 25, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Its sad MrMambo and 1 or 2 others are the only ones that actually read the header! This is for WHAT YOU HAVE!!

On that note, I love…
“Trapster” for avoiding speed traps
“Zillow” for realestate comps and
“Bartender” for drink recipes

Malloy March 25, 2010 at 11:03 pm

The actual Skype app is here!(Skype Mobile) Apparently you cannot use it via wifi(who cares?) and there is no skype in/out feature. Video is also not available, but as someone who has family living in several different countries around the world this app ROCKS!!!

All skype-skype calls are free. All of them. That means if you have this app and I have this app and we want to call each other it won’t take either of our minutes. Or if you are on the computer and want to call me I can answer ANYWHERE!!! for free! no minutes! This is the most excited I have been since I got my droid. I love it and the best part is skype is exclusive with Verizon. So suck it ATT.

I’ve made 2 long phone calls so far and the quality was great. over 2 1 hour calls maybe one garbled response(but that could just be my brother in laws attempt at speech) It goes over verizons 3g network and with 2-3 bars the quality was great.

Download this app, tell your friends to download it, and tell them to tell someone. I want to be able to call every single person and never use a minute, ever! (although on reflection I suppose Verizon2Verizon is already free, but still…..)

Love it!

Also, Aldiko is a good reader and Reveal also has some quality ebooks for free as long as you don’t mind looking through all the Mormon books too.

Any word on version 2.1?

droooooid March 26, 2010 at 7:06 am

I think the apps best on the droid are pandora radio where u create u own radio station …
Zedge for some good quality wallpapers … and savvy scanner … always helps if u kan buy cheaper online or locale

sly March 26, 2010 at 9:36 am

How about an EQ for music? when?

Justin March 26, 2010 at 6:03 pm

The app called bodyfitness is really cool. i just got my phone and it was one of the first apps i got and was impressed that this could be free. You get a diagram of a body and point which muscle you want to work out and itll give u lists of workouts to do. BMI counter and a few other things make it really cool.

Billy Paul March 29, 2010 at 9:00 am

So…some of you feel like this is a POS phone? Go get your I Phone and then you can go on the I Phone fan boy site and sit around and pat each other on the back. Those of you who are spelling dictators, in a web forum, you will find a lot of mistakes, so if it is your hobby, go to it, but don’t take yourself too seriously.

There are tons of apps for the Droid on the ‘net’ and some of the best are free. I’d like to see more free games, but that’s must me. I have found many useful, necessary and helpful apps on this site, a few on other sties. Tricorder has several great features that people have asked for on here. Google Goggles is a free download, so go get it, even if your carrier doesn’t offer it.

It’s a GREAT phone, and I am sure the I Phone is great as well, but I personally love my Droid.

My $0.02435 cents worth (adjusting for inflation)

Molly March 30, 2010 at 8:36 am

Mr. mambo, you made my day. I freaking love your posts. The intensity you bring to your expression of criticism is priceless. I love it!

My favorite app I’ve found so far is Tube Downloader. I may have paid a couple of bucks for that- I don’t remember. What it does is let you convert almost any video on You Tube into an mp3. Then I use Rings Extended, which was free, to put whatever song I like as my ringtone.

Right now I’m trying to figure out if there’s an app that will transcribe what I say into an email or text message. It seems like there should be, since Google Voice can do that same thing basically but in reverse (takes a voice message and transcribes it). If anyone knows how to do this, I’d appreciate the info.

George Chi March 30, 2010 at 7:23 pm

In no particular order:

Gesture Search is a free and easy way to search on your phone using gestures. You simply draw letters on your screen to narrow your search- whether you’re looking through contacts, apps, or whatever.

Advanced Task Manager (Free)- The blue logo does wonders. It is in my opinion the most efficient task manager, and I have tried every single task manager app available on the app market. It really keeps your Droid power-efficient and uncluttered.

Phone My PC is not a free app (9.99), but it allows you to control your PC from your phone! Just download the software to your PCs and set up your profile. This definitely helps if you need to check something on your home PC.

The new 2.1 update for the Droid should include a News and Weather app, but in case you don’t get the update, I suggest Weatherbug. It’s free, and it updates well, and the temperature display is neat and effective. In terms of memory and battery usage, it doesn’t seem to be too draining on my Droid.

SMS Popup is probably the handiest app that I use. It’s free, and I don’t like Handscent’s format. SMS Popup will work with the built-in Messaging app, and simply alerts you with a popup message whenever you receive a text. You can customize your popups to your liking, and it doesn’t interfere with any of your phone’s settings.

Useless Facts is a nice app to use when you’re bored. It passes time well.

I would also recommend most of Google Inc.’s apps, but I would assume that most users would try those apps without any recommendation.

Nik March 31, 2010 at 5:46 pm

Thank you Molly for this awesome thread! (minus the winers. I want an app that will allow me to delete their posts. Is that available? Maybe that’s just an iphone app).

Thank you Mr Mambo, George Chi, webreaver, Just savvy & Dave Osorio for your posts. I am all excited to use Trapster, fxcamera, google sky map, useless facts and DVD codes. I can see it already…I’ll get ZERO work done!

My apps:
key ring by froogloid – gather all of those annoying frequent shopper store cards in one app instead of your wallet or key ring.

Swirl by snooth – wine freaks will LOVE this to search wines by reds, whites, cost, rating, syncs with your GPS to show the closest wine shops, gives pairing suggestions and then the actual winery name.

Lightning Bug – it’s your white noise/ sleep clock for your phone. has a sleep timer, different locations with locale sounds, change colors, alarm to wake up after a nice slumber http://www.1908media.com/mobile/lightningbug/

Pandora – who doesn’t love Free radio?

Dictionary.com – Imma whorriable spealler.

colornote by socialnmobile.com – oh god this app gives me OCD wood. Think of Outlook notes. Customize by color, make it a task list or just a note, add a timer to the note, sort tasks when you completed…. i live by this daily.

shazam – http://www.shazam.com what is the name of this song?? Damn it…. SHAZAM! tells you artist, song, album, links to amazon to download song and youtube to watch the video, stores the songs you tgged so you can go back and remember the title of that song was Boom Boom Boom by the Outhere Brothers. Now let me here you say way-ooh!

Movies by flixster 2.6 – search movies locations times.

Calvin & Hobbes Daily Comic – who doesn’t love an angsty little boy and his pet tiger? Can look at past comics.

Bible KJV – when I need a little Jesus in my day.

Appster March 31, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Some of my favorite apps:
1: If you love zombies and want some exercise check out Zombie, Run! It works off of google maps and you set a location and the GPS follows you. While you move to your location zombies spawn and chase you. Freakin awesome!!!
2: Advance task killer is a must have
3: Pandora and Shazam, finally got all my music in my Ipod labeled woo hoo

The Droid is the Pee and the Poop!!!

Nik April 1, 2010 at 8:32 am

Zombie spawn chasing me?!! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! THAT’S THE BEST APP EV ER!

Downloading IMMEDIATLY…..

You’re welcome Jay!

Gemma April 1, 2010 at 8:52 am

Rembr or Rembr Lite, So useful. Allows you to add calendar appointments by speaking into the phone. Perfect for when you are busy and don’t have the time to type it in.

Also LOVE robodefense!!

Paschar April 1, 2010 at 9:31 pm

The best droid app would be “Fantasy Chat”, go check it out

Molly April 2, 2010 at 6:26 am

Mobile Defense lets you “lo-jack” your Droid so if it happens to walk, you can track it down on Google Maps, so that’s pretty decent.

Alexis April 5, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Is there an app to change the touch screen to pressure instead of heat?

Dave April 5, 2010 at 9:15 pm

I am looking for an app that will duplicate my phones display on my laptop screen. This would make it easier to use some of the phone’s features which are more advanced than my computer…ie voice search, real-time GPS location etc. Thanks!

corey April 5, 2010 at 11:21 pm

it would be great if you could upload videos from your computer like you can on an ipod touch so you can watch videos or movies

Brian April 7, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Kathy, try “handcent sms”. Its a pretty damn good substitute to the “messaging” system on the phone and it shows the date, time and has tons of custom features.

Yie Yie April 8, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Drongo….LOL!….That’s all I have to say about that.

gorillamilk April 8, 2010 at 8:46 pm

@ Drongo… well said.

And to follow up with what the host asked for:

I think my favorite app so far (and I still don’t have an android phone) is the navigation. I know it comes with the phone, but it’s still an app, and it’s great! I like SHAZAM. I like the constellation one. I did like local, but later heard it wasn’t all that. For now, that’s my list. When I finally get my pocket-sized computer that also makes phone calls, I’m sure I’ll find more.

Jim April 13, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Touchdown by Nitrodesk

Stacey April 13, 2010 at 6:21 pm

There is a app for Song ID.
its Shazam. and it works. :)

Danielle April 14, 2010 at 4:39 pm

of course aflashlight, barcode scanner, baseball scores updates within seconds, the weather channel, silentmode onoff, it is so easy to toggle between vibrate and ringer without going into settings…

Tom April 15, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Check out Speedx 3D – cool arcade racer.
Disclaimer: I’m a co-founder of HyperBees Ltd, the publisher of Speedx.
Cheers,
Tom

Robin April 15, 2010 at 3:18 pm

I like to run and keep track of where I go, so the “My Tracks” app is excellent. It shows all your stats, distance, time, avg speed, elevation change, and it creates a trail on google maps that you can share with others. Best of all its FREE!

G Duran April 15, 2010 at 6:16 pm

What the doodle is totally addictive!

Alejandra April 18, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Brian April 19, 2010 at 8:47 pm

A few phone/text productivity apps I love: AutoResponder 1.3.0, which you can set to reply automatically to calls and/or texts when you are unable to answer phone; Voice Caller ID 2.2.1, which says aloud the caller’s name from your contact list; GestureSearch 1.0.1, allows you to draw the first few letters of a contact on the screen–makes finding them much quicker!

Brandon April 21, 2010 at 8:25 am

Great phone! Lovin the Droid. Check out “Google Sky Map”. Shows the constellations and has a search app to look for things. Good Stuff!

Rachelle April 21, 2010 at 8:46 am

I love the bump app. You can just bump your phone next to another phone to exchange information like phone numbers and email. The only problme is not a whole lot of people know about it so when I ask about it they have to find it on the market before you can bump phones!!!
